10QUESTIONS
10QUESTIONS with Rachel Tetlow
Our 10QUESTIONS feature asks members of the Freshfield community ten questions about their working life. Featuring client partners, colleagues and FF friends, our guests share some personal stories, views and fresh words of wisdom.
Our latest guest is Rachel Tetlow, senior membership and programmes manager at pro-manchester, one of the largest business membership and business development organisations in the North.
How do you like to start your working day?
I do love a good list and tend to start by looking at my day as a whole and creating a to do list. I prioritise it and apply specific time slots to each task. I find it helps me focus and makes me less likely to get distracted. I can’t say this always goes to plan – life at pro-manchester is incredibly fast paced and unpredictable – but I thrive in that environment and wouldn’t have it any other way.
Where and how do you come up with your best ideas?
I definitely have the best ideas when I’m out running in the fresh air. It’s the perfect time for me to reflect on work challenges, think through upcoming events, and often realise what still needs to be done. Running helps me clear my mind and makes way for new ideas.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
A speaker at one of our events once said ‘Treat your family like you would treat your most important client’ which really resonated with me. Work is a huge part of my life but family first – always.
What does leadership mean to you?
To me a good leader must be approachable, open to new ideas and be able to admit failure and show vulnerability.
What’s your top tip for achieving a work-life balance?
Exercise is important to me, so I do ensure I make time to run and go to the classes that I enjoy at the gym. It’s easy to think ‘I can’t spare the time’, but I’m definitely more productive for doing it. Also, regular catch ups with my friends keeps me smiling – friendship can’t be overestimated.
Which current or historical business figure do you most admire and why?
James Timpson – his culture of kindness and true respect for others is inspirational.
What is your most trusted source of news?
I wouldn’t say I have one trusted source – I watch Sky News and the BBC, but do like reading others’ take on current affairs on platforms like X.
What is your favourite brand and why?
I’m not really a brand person, but I suppose I would say Apple as it’s one of the only brands that I wouldn’t consider changing (if that makes sense).
What’s the most recent new skill you have learnt?
Hmmm good question. I can’t think of anything I’ve learned recently though I am very keen to give Padel a go. Perhaps writing this will motivate me to do just that. Anyone in?
We all use them… what management jargon phrase do you use the most?
I do try to avoid the cringeworthy ‘David Brent isms’ but I think ‘touch base’ and ‘keeping you in the loop’ sneak in every now and again despite my best efforts.
